Attractive Anglo-Indian antique elephant carved rosewood table.
A lovely antique rosewood elephant carved table. We date this table to the early 20th century.
The table sits on four well carved elephant legs and the carved top depicts the goddess Lakshmi.
Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, prosperity and luck. She provides not only material wealth, but also good health and a joyful family life. She was born from the milky ocean seated on a lotus and holding a blossom in her hand. In Hindu art, she is always smiling kindly. She wears a red sari and coins rain down from two of her hands. In her other two hands she holds lotuses, representing the spiritual gifts she bestows. She is often shown seated on a lotus and being anointed by two elephants.
The main table is oval in shape and has been decoratively carved throughout with the goddess sitting between two elephants and set within a decorative foliate carved display.
The table has a height of 23" (59cm), a width of 30.5" (78cm) and a depth of 17.5" (45cm).
This lovely table remains in a good solid condition with only minor surface markings commensurate with age and usage. There is some wear to the top surface and there are some small areas of wear to some of the edges including some small chips to the table edge.
This remains a very stylish and elegant table. It will continue to provide sterling service for many years to come.
