Pair of French 19th Century Life height Cast-Iron Sculptures - Torcheres of Native American Indians Titled "L Indienne" Designed by Jules Salmson.

Life height, solid and very heavy, these have just been professionally rewired and PAT tested and are ready to display.

They are rather rare and unique decorative items. They have the original glass light shades in a torch flame form.

These fantastic and impressive pair of cast-iron sculptures, most likely representing Hiawatha and Minnehaha, were probably comissioned toLe Fonderies d'Art du Val d'Osnefor export to the America's to decorate governmental buildings and parks which makes these pair a rare find and now available for a private collection. Iron sculptures were preferred over bronze for outdoor park and building decorations for their long lasting resistance to all types of weather conditions. An identical pair of sculptures, also byVal d' Osne, are currently exhibited at theNational Garden of Congress in Santiago, Chile.View Pages No. 87, 88, 89. Another identical pair are also currently exhibited atThe Muse de la Ville - Indian Museum "O Indio do Museo da Cidade" in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Another identical pair decorate the front of thepera Teatro Amazonas, Manas, Brazil. A single figure of the female Indian is on display atThe Teatro Alberto Maranho in Natal, Brazil. A single figure of the male Indian, probaly the matching pair to the one at theTeatro Alberto Maranho in Natal, is on display at "L'Indien Parc National de Tijuca" - O indio do Parque Nacional da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fonderies d'Art du Val d'Osne Established in 1835 byJ.P.V. Andr, theFonderies d'Art du Val d'Osnewas known for their high quality and extensive collection of cast-iron architectural designed sculptures created exclusively forVictor Andrby some of the most reputed and established Parisian sculptors likeCarrier-Belleuse, Mathurin Moreau, Delaplanche and Pradier.The prolific firmFonderies d'Art du Val d'Osneparticipated in numerous international exhibitions and was acclaimed at the1857 London Exhibitionwith a monumental bronze fountain cast with swans and Classical figures. The firm was acquired byBarbezat & Cie. in 1867, and allying with thefondeur J.J. Duceltowards 1870, and was renamedSocit Anonyme des Hauts-Fourneaux & Fonderies du Val-D'Osne, Anciennes maison J.P.V. Andr et J.J. Ducel et Fils. The most celebrated work or art cast by the firm would be irrefutably the Parisian subway entrances designed byHector Guimard. A lovely brass oil lamp. We date this lamp to the late 19th century.

The lamp has a decorative brass corinthian pillar base. The glass font has a colour that really goes well with the brass.
The lamp's shade has a lovely etched design on cranberry glass.

The lamp is fitted with a twin burner.

The lamp has a height of 29" (73cm) at highest, the cranberry shade has a diameter of 7 (18cm) and the base is 5.5 (13cm) square.

This lovely lamp remains in very good solid condition with only minor surface markings commensurate with age and usage with some very minor marks to the brass finish, primarily around the base.

This remains a very stylish and elegant lamp. It will continue to provide sterling service for many years to come.
